Deep Well Pump:  Choose the Right Deep Well Pump for You

There are a number of things that you need to note before heading to the store to shop for a deep well pump.  You need to be equipped with some information because the pump that you will use will depend on that information.  You need to make some measurements.  You can ask someone to help you or you can ask a plumber to do it for you.  What are the measurements that you will need? 

First will be the depth of your well.  A deep well can go from 20ft. up to 500 ft. and you need to know the exact depth so that when the sales people will know what pump to suggest to you when you get to their shop.  Aside from this number, you also need to get how far you will pump the water from the well.  Is your storage tank near the pump?  Does the pump need to bring the water a few meters to the house?  How far is the house from the pump?

When you know the depth of your well, you may choose easily between a jet pump (double drop) or a submersible pump.  A jet pump uses two pipes and is put on the ground.  The first pipe produces air pressure and the second pipe draws water from the well.  A submersible pump as the name suggests is put inside the well.  It is a small cylindrical shaped pump that is put inside a well casing.  It doesn’t need a large hole and it is pulled with the well casing when it needs to be repaired.

You also need to know how much water you typically need every day.  A pump that will be used for irrigation of large tracts of lands is more powerful than a pump that will only be used for home.  The amount of water that it can pump is measured in GPM or gallon per minutes.  A household of 4 will need 8- 12 GPM pump while a large tract of land will need a bigger pump. 

You need to know too the different parts of the pump.  When you buy a pump, all of the parts are brand new but you need to have knowledge of the parts so that you know what the plumbing contractor is talking about when he installs the pump.  Some of the most important parts are the electric motor, the jet assembly, the pressure tank, the check valve, the pressure switch and the rope that is used for submersible pumps so that they can be pulled out for repairs.
