Shallow Well Pump:  Advantages and Disadvantages

A shallow well pump is perfect for wells that need pumping lift of less than 20 feet.  Its main parts are the electric motor, the impeller and the jet.  It is put on the ground near the well and connecting pipe is in the water.  It has two kinds:  single drop and double-drop. 

The pumping action of this kind of pump happens when the electric motor moves the impeller to spin.  Once the impeller spins, a vacuum is produced which then produces air pressure.  The air pressure lifts water into the jet assembly and the jet assembly brings the water to the storage tank.  A check valve is needed to prevent the water from going back to the well.

What are the advantages of a shallow well pump?  The first advantage is that it is easy to find and it is relatively cheap.  It is one of the cheapest pumps that you can find in hardware stores and even at online stores.  Even if it has limited horsepower, it can do the work and it doesn’t consume a lot of electricity.  For those who need it for use at home, it is a good investment.  In the long run, the homeowner will save a lot because they don’t have to pay the monthly water bill.

Another advantage of this kind of pump is that it has a simple design and it is very easy to maintain.  When it breaks down, the most likely thing you need to do is to buy a part such as jet assembly or an impeller.  These parts are available in many hardware stores.  You don’t have to spend a lot of money for the maintenance as compared to other complicated pumps.  The expenses for the maintenance are very minimal.

It is also very easy to install.  For those who know basic plumbing and don’t mind dirtying their hands, they can install the pump themselves.  But for those who want to hire plumbing contractors, there is also no problem with this because the services of these contractors are not expensive.  They should choose contractors that have extensive experience with shallow wells and pumps.  Once the jet pump is installed, it is not difficult to maintain.  Just make sure that the unit is not clogged by sand and other solid materials and the pump will yield water for you and for your family.

The advantages of shallow jet pump is that it cannot be used for wells that are deeper than 20 feet.  It will not be able to draw water from deep wells because it is not very powerful and it won’t be able to lift water when used for deep wells.  Another advantage is that the shaft of the pump should always have water so that it will not clog.  Because of this, even if it doesn’t need that much maintenance, owners still need to check it once in a while for the water.

A shallow jet pump has advantages and disadvantages.  The main advantages are that it is affordable and that it is easy to maintain.  The main disadvantages are that it cannot be used for wells deeper than 20 feet.  Consider these things first before buying or replacing your pump.
